This advertisement from the forties extolls the virtues of nickel by describing (in horrifically boring detail) how the replacement of magnesium-oxide and iron range elements with ones made from Inconel, an alloy made up of 79% nickel, can boost element longevity by preventing corrosion by food acids, which, in turn, helps employ “the men of Canada”. Obviously it’s not the copy that makes this piece so great. It’s the fantastic ink drawing of men producing nickel shot at the Port Colborne Nickel refinery. Better still, this image is only one of over sixty illustrations which readers of the day could request in hard-cover bound format by writing to the International Nickel Company of Canada in Toronto. The name of this book? “The Romance of Nickel”. Classic.
