Why were these made? Are they for a biology lab or decoration? They are pretty but also seem educational.

They originally created these pieces as art, but thier interest in mushrooms was so great, they studied the mushrooms they sculpted and made them as realistic as you see them here. Some collectors, such as the University of Victoria, have even used them for teaching mycology as they are so accurately created.
