Over the last few years we’ve probably featured more of Marian Bantje’s work than any other designer. With her whimsically conceived and meticulously rendered illustrations, objects, and art direction, Bantjes has amassed a devoted following of designers and non-designers alike, all in awe of her immense talents (myself included). Which is why the recent release of Bantje’s Restraint font by Tiro Typeworks has a lot of designers giddy with the potential of creating their very own Bantjes-ish designs. Restraint is described as “an ornament font which happens to contain letterforms”. An accurate description given that you’ll only find 26 letters, a hyphen, question mark, and ampersand. The rest of the font is a collection of squiggles, curlicues, grids, and connectors, each meticulously rendered in Bantje’s signature style. In addition, Bantjes and Mills have put considerable thought into how each character is mapped, such that (with a bit of practice) users of the font will soon find themselves typing in Bantjes unique graphical language (a beautifully designed pdf explains the logic behind the mappings).
