This survival kit/informational brochure is aimed at the homeless population in Vancouver, BC. I assume that the box would be given to folks down on their luck, and would contain useful items like blankets and tarps, and that the package would than be kept for its informational advantages (maps, call out, etc). I am not completely convinced that this was based on any genuine research (Imagine touring around the city with a box map, or assuming that the homeless need a better designed box to live in) but the general idea is very interesting. We are swimming in packaging, that for the most part was created for a single use, so using the surface of boxes and giving them a second use is such a valuable and timely thing to do. Not new, but still an important design strategy.
