Photo: Chimay Bleue A lovely, enigmatic stainless steel giant crab provides a dramatic entry point to the Museum of Vancouver (formally known as the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre Planetarium ). It is hard to figure out the actual thinking behind this installation, but the supplied content from the gallery states that the crab is the Squamish people’s mythical harbour protector, giving the work a localized tone and reference.

You didn’t get it from behind. It frames a series of flags with a Canadian Flag at the centre.

The crab is actually a fountain, but the water was turned off that day.Usually the crab sits in a reflecting pool, but the pool had been drained while the building was being resurfaced and repaired. The empty pool actually makes for a nice phototraph. Both photos are by my friend Darren Bradley (Chimay Bleue on Flickr). Skot’s right, it’s also a time capsule! I loved this thing as a kid (and still do).

This thing is whacko, love it. I wish that more architecture would embrace the idea of sculpture, although Vancouver seems to have a lot. We are not doing so well in Winnipeg.
