This is the brand new fare token unveiled by the Toronto Transit Commission on Nov 26, 2006. This two-tone design replaces the old tokens which have been in use since 1954. According to the TTC, who is suing the company that manufactured the old tokens, revenue lost to the easily counterfeited tokens in the last few years is over $10 million. These new tokens are supposedly embedded with visible and invisible anti-counterfeiting security measures– similar to the kind used in casinos. Not the most beautiful design, but there is something to its simplicity, in an early 1900s, Constructivist kind of way.
